New Design of the Market Square and Adjacent Streets

Freyburg’s distinctive character is a result of the stimulating interaction between the medieval city centre and those elements which have a formative influence: the Schlifterberg Hill, Neuenburg Castle and the Unstrut River. Vineyards extend right into the centre of the city. The intricate and densely-built Old City is also characterised by buildings of the Gründerzeit Period (1850-1914) such as the Jahn Memorial and the Rotkäppchen Wine Cellars.
Completion of a new bypass brought the square relief from a federal road’s through traffic. This measure, part of the Old City’s redevelopment, meant that the market square and its adjacent streets could be redesignated as a large-scale urban open space. In the centre of the city it was therefore possible to create an additional attractive, multipurpose space. The market square is a representative urban plaza that offers both citizens and visitors a special experience. Its form refers to the surroundings’ historic context, but the design idiom is nonetheless thoroughly modern.
The entire market square's surface is uniformly paved in regionally-sourced limestone; the square’s various functional areas are delineated through the use of different size pavers and surface finishes. All necessary furniture and lighting is accommodated within two symmetrical bands of slabs running parallel to the buildings lining the square’s long sides, thus the central area remains free of objects.
In association with the local limestone and the fossils often contained within it, a huge ammonite has been chiselled into the rectangular base of the fountain.
As a reminder of the equestrian statue of Duke Christian, a bronze frame with lettering has been embedded in the pavement at its former location.
