Storage building onto the Hesterberg

The new storage building onto the Hesterberg in Schleswig will be a part of the central repository for the foundation “Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen Schloss Gottorf” (state museum Castle Gottorf). The special climatic properties of the building enable an optimal storage of wooden and metal art objects within the different storeys. An almost square new building is planned for replacing the demolished building 16/17, which keeps open the option for an eventual extension. The two-storey storage building assimilates harmonically into the dimension of the listed existing building. A structure of small yards and areas develops and underlines the unity of the buildings and the creation of an ensemble. The existing buildings were built by craftsmanship with visible brickwork. The design of the new construction is influenced by the concept of mutual appreciation of the old and the new. Characteristics of the existing building are abstracted in the new construction and transformed into modern architectural language.
