This house is situated on the Wernhalde ridge, among a development of free-standing detached houses typical of hillside locations in Stuttgart. The terrain rises 3 metres above the access road and is part of a former villa estate. The tea house on the road above the garage dates from the early 20th century. Here, the path ascending towards the house starts, leading around the house and ending at the entrance at the back. On the southwest side, the old trees and a new, curved wall panel create a courtyard-like exterior space, which opens onto the edge of the wood on the opposite side. The large room on the ground floor, which consists of various spatial zones merging into one another, is also oriented towards this “opposite”. The individual zones are characterised by the alternation of light and dark, high and low, narrow and wide. This creates a spatial continuum with a variety of spatial densities. A large “window” connects the ground floor with the underground “free space”, which is situated 6 metres deeper. This area is designed to allow various uses for a variety of purposes, both professional - as a venue for lectures, seminars etc. – and for the exhibition of classic racing cars, one of the client’s passions.
