Castle Hill at the Amtsgarten in Lüchow

The Castle Hill in Lüchow is an architectural monument. In addition to the remaining tower, whose rooms are now used for exhibitions about the town's history, there are also foundations and remnants of the town's old castle walls. Redesigning the castle hill has brought this site, which played an important role in the development of the town, back to life. A paved area containing magnificent old trees traces the ground plan of the castle. Its shape provides a spatial context for the tower and also serves as a space for public events. Benches invite people to linger and observe.

The old castle had four wings and an enclosed courtyard. In the design of the new plaza, large granite slabs are used to trace the castle's ground plan. The colours and materials used relate to those of the remaining foundations, which in this region were typically made of quarried boulders. Self-binding gravel is used to show where the buildings within the castle were located. This allows for unhindered circulation and provides space for temporary markets. The original enclosed courtyard is now an open lawn area where it is possible to play or store things. A round stage is located where a stair tower was once found and the lawn provides space for the audience during performances.
