The Museum for Art and Culture is prominently located between the Domplatz and the Rothenburg in the centre of Münster. The elongated building forms a sequence of spaces that can be used by pedestrians as a public passage through the museum. This starts at the courtyard near the Domplatz, continues through the spacious foyer to a paved patio and finally to an urban plaza at the Rothenburg. Like a carpet that extends through the building, light-coloured concrete paving guides visitors as they walk through the building, and also corresponds to the exposed concrete surfaces of the museum's façades.

The urban plaza at the Rothenburg is, however, paved with granite setts, as is much of the city centre. The finally sawn surface of this material provides pedestrians with a safe surface in all kinds weather. Granite steps are used at the change of levels between the plaza and the adjacent street. The height of the steps is gradually reduced as the difference in levels disappears. In addition to the outdoor seating at a restaurant, a variety of places to sit are also provided at the plaza.
