„Neues Gymnasium“ secondary school

 Back to Projects list
Location
Bochum
Year
2012

The ‘Neues Gymnasium’ consists of two interlocking ring-shaped buildings. The inner area of the smaller building part is closed by an approx. 1,000m² pneumatically supported air-cushion membrane roof. The larger building part is not roofed and is designed as an open-air greened inner courtyard.
The three-storey secondary school building with a floor plan measuring approx. 125 x 70 meters, and approx. 12 meters high was built as a monolithic structure without joints using in-situ concrete with reinforced concrete slabs.

As a rule, the distance between columns is approx. 7 – 8 meters. For the especially column-free use of the assembly hall, the walls in the overhead levels L1 and L2 were designed as deep beams so that together with the slabs, a very effective structural system was created with which a very large span width was made economically possible.
Bracing was achieved through the evenly distributed stairwell cores along the floor plan and additionally by the existing elevators and firewalls.
