The AGFA-Tower Block on the Tegernernseer Landstrasse in Munich, erected in 1959, no longer met the increased requirements of a modern office building, and is therefore to be replaced by a new building of the same cubic dimensions. The commission for the facade design came out of a limited competition, which the investors had put out to tender in order to create an architecturally prominent accent in this exposed urban space.

With the design of the facade relief, we were primarily concerned with working around the rather unsatisfactory urban context we found at the location: a small protrusion of the contour along the elongated main facade and small reliefs on the representative side of the block define the building as a kind of reclining tower block with raised head. Single elements like balustrades, sun shades, columns and supporting framework are interpreted here as bands woven together like fabric.

The resulting weave continues across all building elements thus stressing the overall structure of the building. With the new building, the southern entrance to the city will hereby gain an architecturally striking feature.
