Federal Bank
Halle (Saale) / Germany, 2001
Description
The new office complex for the Federal Bank in Halle is the starting point for a new garden-city-style development.

Core element of the small new office park is the lake. It works both as a natural separation between the office complex and the employees´ residentials and as stormwater storage and filtration system. As space is limited and lots of lawn are not a must, more than half of the softscape area is covered by water. The lakes starts formally as an artificial, modernistic pond, but its architectural form gives way to a natural shore line full waterlilies and other decorative water plants, thus strengthening the self-purification process of the water body.

The materials used for the park reflect both the character of the surrounding 19th century urbanisation and the moderism of the architecture: granite pavement continuing the character to the neighbouring streets, is contrasted by the fairfaced concrete for all walls and wood-steel construction fpr the pergolas and carports. The plantation, apart from the informal approach, had to follow the high security standards appropiate for a  federal state bank.

Creating a representative open space for the employees of the bank, the few yet carefully selected elements form a suitable and noble surrounding for the elegance of office and residential buildings. In terms of sustainability, only durable materials with expected low future maintenance costs were selected. As the lake is due to its layout fairly self-maintaining, maintenance coists are reduced to a minimum.
