One of the twin buildings of the "Magasins Généraux" was destroyed by fire, thereby breaking the symmetry and composition at the Bassin de la Villette. Though the faithful renewal of the lost building volume recreates this balance, the new building differentiates itself from the existing one in the lightness and transparency of its skin.
The program includes a hotel, a youth hostel and a restaurant.
Through its oscillating silhouette, intermediate spaces are created which draw light as well as visitors into the courtyard of the building block. The building skin forms a long structure which encloses the hotel and youth hostel along with the roof terraces. Behind a metal façade layer, timber cladding makes reference to the former port function of the water basin and the building opposite.
